Our story

Why I Created the Keeperlings

A handmade crochet Keeperling resting beside a closed storybook and a single lit candle

The idea for The Keeperlings was born while my son was going through leukemia and chemotherapy. Hospital rooms, treatment schedules, bloodwork, frightening numbers, long waits, and uncertainty became the texture of our days.

In the middle of it, I learned how powerful one small bright moment could be. Not a cure. Not a fix. Just a moment — something soft to hold, something that made my son smile, something that reminded us both that he was a whole person and not only a patient.

When someone you love is suffering, you often cannot fix what is happening. You can still sit beside them, bring them something that makes them smile, and remind them that they are more than a diagnosis.

I started crocheting small creatures in waiting rooms and on long evenings. Each one felt like it was carrying something — a little warmth, a little recognition, a small bright moment kept safe in wool. I gave them names, and stories, and Callings.

That became the heart of The Keeperlings. They are not medicine. They are not a treatment for anything. They are companions — made by hand, one stitch at a time, for the humans carrying hard things.

The First Finder & Emberwing

Before any Keeperlings arrived in the human world, Emberwing became the first to find his human: Darren Swatko, The First Finder. Today, Darren and Emberwing travel together searching for unusual rocks and listening for the faint flicker of Keeperlings ready to be discovered. When they find one, they bring its story back to Harmony to stitch into a form you can hold.

With love, Harmony
